Information Architecture in the Field: Survival Guide in a Hostile Context

(This story was given as a presentation at the Euro IA 2009 conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.)
Lenin once said, “The first mission of a revolutionist is to survive.” He lost his 19-year old brother, Aleksandr Ulyanov, in May 1887, when he was only 17. Aleksandr was hung for participating in terrorist assassination attempt against the tsar Alexander III. Lenin learned his lesson: you can’t change the world when you’re not even in the game. Similarly, information architects looking to make a difference first need to stay in the game.

Service design: “Be my guest!”

A service can be defined as anything which makes your life easier, helps you solve a problem, brings you closer to achieving a goal, or benefits you in a way you didn’t think you needed. We can classify services according to three basic types: services which assist (that say “let me help you with that”), services which enhance (“here’s a free gift”) and services which fix (“don’t worry, we’ll get you moving again in no time”).

Pourquoi gotand ?

Gotand est une contraction de "genius of the AND" : c'est à Peter Morville que je dois cette expression, plus particulièrement à son ouvrage Ambient Findability. Elle résume parfaitement ma double ambition : faire connaître l'architecture d'information en France et promouvoir une approche pluridisciplinaire de la conception web. A regarder de près ce qui ce passe aujourd'hui en France, je mesure combien ce point de vue est marginal, mais j'espère que ce blog pourra faire découvrir à d'autres tout l'intérêt de cette démarche.
